| KRISISDnB AT GATECRASHER - THE SUMMER SOUND SYSTEM 2008 REVIEW The 24-25th Bank holiday weekend in May 2008 saw NeO, MX, Spitfire and Fleabag make the trip to one of the biggest dance music events of the year. Here is our review of the weekend |
Basic details : Event : Gatecrasher - The Summer Soundsystem 2008 The Bank holiday has landed !! What we have now is 72 hours of pumpin tunes, undercooked burgers, overpriced beers and obviously a heavy downpour or two of rain followed by swamp-like conditions that even Daz Ultra wont get out of your jeans !! It all started at 12noon on saturday (only 2 hours behind schedule which isnt too bad for NeO). The KRISISDnB executive transport (the rusty dark purple escort with a broken rear side window - integrated air conditioning system im told) arrived at KRISIS TOWERS to pick up MX. With Spitfire and Fleabag already on board we still had some bits to get before we headed off up the A34 (a tent being one of them!!) towards Turweston Aerodrome near Brackley. Hedge end industrial estate held the answer !! Halfords had tents going cheap!! Well about £50 later, a boot ram packed with luggage, tents, sleeping bags and enough food to cater for a coach load of coffin dodgers on a day out in Bournemouth we hit the motorway.

MX and NeO had their usual argument about what time we should have left and who was actually late, but its all in good humour and is would break a tradition if we didnt both have a moan. Time to get sum bangin tunes on the stereo. Spitfire looked through the glove compartment to find one lonely tape. It didnt matter, at the speed we were travelling we would barely play one side of it, BUT............ ......... the faces around the car looked at each other, Not nightlife 4, not a recording of one of our shows, not even the latest Now album. Only the finest indian curry house dance music that sounded like it had come from the Taj Mahal Emporium in Portsmouth !!! However it did speed up the journey and by just before 3pm we were in the queue to pick up our VIP tickets (only the best !!). Well almost an hour passed and we finally got our wristbands and faced the journey to the camp site (about 1-2 miles) on foot with all the luggage. Almost there and we went through the security check. Shouldnt be any problem bringing in a 3ft bright red bong surely !!! Yeah right !!! Back NeO walked to the car to put it back in the car. Haha The tents were up, the Southern comfort was flowing and the weekend had started. We found out we had missed our interview with Logan D as he had gone on first. There was still a chance we would catch up with him at some point. A nice chap supplied us with the essential ingredients for a hard weekends raving. We walked in the DnB tent which was rammed, recognised the wobbly thumpin bass of Logan D on the stage !! Whey hey ! One of the best sets of the weekend without a doubt and a brief interview with Logan outside after his set had all of us buzzing for what was to come !! Oh yes it was time for the Prodigy to tear apart the outside stage. We got quite close to the front next to a bank of the largest speakers ive ever seen and the video on my phone shows pretty well how loud it was. It looked like every single person at Gatecrasher was swarmed around the outside stage to catch a glimpse of a live set from Keith Flint and the rest of the Prodigy. A truly sick performance !! The night flew by (or was that just us) after seeing Goldie, Roni Size, TC and more it was fast approaching 5am. We did think £20 for 6 migrane pills was slighly steep especially as we didnt have a migrane! The camera was takin pics of everyone in the arenas and from a birdwatchers point of view the sights were astounding!! NeO and spitfire were jossling for one bird who obviously shared tastes in caps and went for Spitfire. Oh yes the Tea cosy vs the Flat cap !! It all looked rosy (lee - god that was shit!!) till...... Spitfire panicked !!! We gotta get away !!! Neo, Fleabag and me were confused..... Lets go now while she is at the bar !! I cant do anyfink wiv her, she is wearing scummy Reebok Classics !!!! Had to be one of the funniest things on the whole weekend so far !! Back to the tent for some more Southern Comfort and a smoke.

The weather had been a bit windy, but fine overall. Sunday was not going to be the same. The tents were blowing everywhere, the rain was lashing down, oh yes t was now a proper festival !! NeO decided to dress up as the Michelin man in bin liners (could come across as quite kinky if your that way inclined). We waited till late to go to the arena, and even thru the rain we managed to get the bbq going. Spitfire came up with the idea of next year opening the KRISIS TAKEAWAY selling Baps, Crack, Burgers and Beer !! Between us we could stock Arkwrights store for a week !! Time to get to the arena !!! The swamp outside was a challenge to get through, NeO covered in bin liners up to the waist we were all waiting for him to go arse over tit (unfortunately it didnt happen). The outside stage was closed when Pendulum live were due on, looked like the weather was too bad. DJ Marky smashed it propa with a set of both classics and the latest releases. Rumours were goin round that Pendulum were being moved into the DnB tent to do their performance. In the mean time possibly the wierdest set of all was DJ Yoda's Magic Cinema show displaying the world of video DJing. It took some time to prepare the Metropolis tent for a live set, but by the time they went on the tent was full, and the queue to get in was huge as well. Whether you like pendulum or not, seeing their live performance is something else and till you have seen it you cannot judge them. With around 70% of the people there on the sunday all crowding to the tent then they have plenty of support for what they do. The night rolled on with class sets from DJ Steppa (and his 2 mcs - soz, cant remember their names but were sick on the mic), High Contrast, LTJ Bukem, Shy FX and more. Was time to hit the market and fairground. |

With cash running out fast the bank machine took a battering. Only £4.50 a bottle of carlesburg, £10 for a phone charger that only worked if you held it in a certain position and only added 1 blob to your battery after about 2 hours, and the cash machine that charged you £2.50 for the privelidge of using it. Another heavy night was done. We were all praying for bright skys on Monday morning and it was looking good when I woke up at 10am, however by lunchtime it was pissing it down again. We looked outside to see loads of people abandoning their homes for the weekend and decided to do the same. The mission trek back to the car was not appealing anyway without having to pack up tents and get soaked and covered in mud in the process! A class weekend however and even more people know about KRISISDnB.COM which is all good publicity for the station and artists who play on it. Next events are the Mossley Festival and also Upstairz in July The Gatecrasher 2008 krew (NeO, MX, Spitfire and Fleabag)
