KRISISDnB Feature HIGHROLLER (Crooked Beatz Recordings) 2008 brings some changes for Josh Hyde (formerly of Dub Alley) so we decided to get the first interview with the original 'Wobble master' and hear his plans for this year and beyond. Now using the name 'DJ Highroller' Josh has started up his own label 'Crooked Beatz' and has already had a mass of support from artists all over the globe. |
Name : Josh Hyde KRISISDnB : From what we saw in the UK, I think its fair to say 2007 was a big year for Dub Alley. Whats your personal view on 2007? Highroller : Its really hard to get a grasp of how our sound went down overseas as its not mainstream or anything in Perth...yet. Judging by the record sales I think that things went down quite well so far, a lot of people liking the style. 07 was definatly a hard year for me personally, but i learnt a shitload quickly and thats the main thing to progression. KRISISDnB : Only a month into 2008, and a new record label, new name, and more new tunes in the making, things look even better. What are your targets for this year? Highroller : I wanted actually to start again from scratch, clear my head and make sure it was about the music. At the moment im not playing any shows in clubs or out in Perth as im busy working in the studio (making tunes, recording promo mixes for label and refining turntable skills)or working on the label witht he Odd KRisisdnb Show here and there to promo some dubs. I also carrying out a lot of other commitments such as being a dad and a fairly demmanding day job. I aim to really push my music hard in the overseas markets, esp the UK and eventually build up my reportoir under the High Roller guise and take overseas booking, i cant afford the time to do extended "away trip" tours atm tho so only 1 week max trips if the bookings do come through. The Dub Alley tour is still going ahead tho so dont worry! Willo will be at the helm for that.

KRISISDnB : Your new label 'Crooked Beatz' is in early days at the moment. Can you tell us a bit about it? The names you have had show interest in joining? Highroller : Crooked Beatz is my new venture to put out my own tracks, as well as other new budding talent that can produce a high standard of quality, big releases, as well as a few well known names appearing. Look out for remixes down the track too;-) KRISISDnB : Is there a current release schedule for tunes on the new label? Highroller : 001 - High Roller - Back Pressure/Big Booty Bounce (Promo March) KRISISDnB : Are you still looking for more artists to join? If so what are the things you look for in a producer and his/her tunes? Highroller : I am always interested to check out tracks and if they are sweet ill test them out in the mix, if they have the right vibe/quality etc then and i have a slot availiable i will try and put it out if i think its going to sell, and the wow factor isthere. KRISISDnB : Starting your own label must be a lot of work. Does this mean we will see less of your own tunes being released as you work on the label? Or is your intention to keep producing as well? Highroller : Producing is my fav and whether i was releasing tracks or not i would still be making tunes in the studio no question. Basically the only other thing i do apart from making tunes is the label work or motocross(when i get time). As long as my quality is good then i will release it. I plan to put most of my tracks out on Crooked Beatz unless another label offers me the right deal for those particular tunes. I want to make sure i release 6 out of every 10 12's with my tracks on them, sounds like a good ratio lets hope i can keep pumping them at that rate lol:-p KRISISDnB : I know through speaking to you that you currently have no forthcoming events planned apart from your monthly show on KRISISDnB. NeO and myself have to thank you for being a regular on the station alongside the whole of the Inhibit Crew. Im guessing the next few months are going to be a lot of hard work with the label and your own producing. You will have to make sure we know when you are back playing live, and even better when you are coming to KRISIS HQ in the UK !!

Highroller : What ever gets the goods the quickest! KRISISDnB : We understand Rolf Harris is your musical inspiration, so whats ur favourite? ‘Tie me kangaroo down’ or ‘Two little boys’ ? Highroller : deffo Tie me Kangaroo Down Sport, had to tie my own down last night had strong winds coming through my back yard! KRISISDnB : Who’s better at Rugby? England or Australia ? Highroller : New Zealand lol KRISISDnB : Edna Everage or Les Patterson?? Highroller : Thats DAME Edna Everage KRISISDnB : Crocodile Hunter or Crocodile Dundee? Ok, back to the music... KRISISDnB : What tips would you give home producers (and some of the producers we have on KRISISDnB) to make better tunes? What tools do you use yourself for your own tunes? What makes a 'Highroller' ? Highroller : well firstly its not what u use its how you use it, not the tools rather but the tradesman. Of course u can get more stuff to give ur sounds more life, but a lot of talented producers are using fairly budget setups, including myself!
