Rowney and Propa G

Guess who...

Ruthless Kombination at KRISIS STUDIO X in Southampton

KRISISDnB : The collaboration with you and Propa G seems to be developing well. How long have you known each other? Tell us about what you both have planned both now and in the future?

Rowney : About a year and a half, we gelled quickly cos we were both into the same type of dnb and on the same wavelength, plus we're both jokers and just became good m8s basically...just hoping we get more bookings this year, we ain't called 'RUTHLESS KOMBINATION' for nothing, we like to mash up raves fo real lol...Propa is launching his label G13 very soon as well via nu urban, look out for it

KRISISDnB : What have been the biggest and most memorable events you have played at?

Rowney : dnb infest @ birmingham, djed b2b erbman with frisko and backchat in march 2007. most memorable i don't know, had good and bad gigs, u take the rough with the smooth in djing, shit setups can be a big factor in how good sets are, u just gotta adapt to these situations

KRISISDnB : How and when did you first get into Drum n Bass? What or who were your inspirations?

Rowney : Got into dnb thru smoking weed haha..smokin bongs one day in 1998 and my old mates had a dj hype tape on, tunes such as turbulence, the one, ready or not remix and chopper basically changed my life, i was instantly hooked. started buying dnb in 99 and not stopped since lol. inspirations i'd say would be hype cos i always idolised him, hyper d cos he was a great mc and i loved his flow, big loss for dnb RIP, i loved kenny kens sets in 98/99, his style had me buzzing, dancefloor jumpup with tunes like twisted individual - wales and dj zinc - citizens were big favourites for me back then..still drop em both time to time.

KRISISDnB : What other types of music do you listen to?

Rowney : Grime / hip hop mainly..used to be big into hardcore n hard trance before dnb, not in touch with them scenes no more lol

KRISISDnB : What producing tips would you give to any of the other KRISISDnB producers that are also making tunes?

Rowney : Get monitors as soon as you can..cos once you can make tunes theres a lot of work to be done, mixdowns are so important, you need to be able to feel your drums on the speakers, nothin worse than flat beats..drums are the hardest things with mixdowns, if your drums are shit the tune will sound crap on a big system, sometimes i have to do 3 or 4 mixdowns before i'm satisfied with em, the crucial test is hearing your beats at a rave, if they sound out of place mixed with vinyls and mastered tunes you've still got a lot of work to do.
i'm still learning, theres a lot of new artists who's mixdowns are better, such as jayline/shifta/lyptikal/dr dub etc;

KRISISDnB : Out of all the tunes you have made what has been your personal favourite and why? If its not out yet then let us know when and what label.

Rowney : Tough question i really don't know..i don't make anything i don't like, i've made tunes where i know i could have done things better but never sold out (IMO) and made anything i'm not feeling.. faves probably are 'we don't ramp' / misery guts / just try it / footsolja / short circuit / coffee table / space cadet...can't say just one lol...none of em have come out apart from 'we don't ramp' which is forthcoming, the rest are just old faves of mine

KRISISDnB : Apart from yourself, who is gonna make it big in 2008?

Rowney : A lot of people lol - cabbie / sly / callide / tantrum desire / origin / digital era / jayline / duballey / prestige / shifta / p.a / sensa / tyke / complex / dr dub / ego trippin / kg / hoogs etc etc etc etc;

KRISISDnB : Who are your favourite DJs and MCs or producers worldwide?

Rowney : Pleasure / Hazard / Tantrum desire at the mo

KRISISDnB : How do you see the Drum n Bass industry moving forward? Do you see it becoming more mainstream or staying underground? The Drum and Bass awards seem to be trying to bring DnB more mainstream. Do you think thats a good thing or not?

Rowney : I just don't know...when things go mainstream people start to sell out and go commercial, the true dnb heads don't like it, pendulum is a big example of this..I respect them cos they are excellent producers but the tunes they make these days make me cringe...

KRISISDnB : What software / Hardware do you use to make your own tunes?

Rowney : Fruityloops 7 studio with plugins - z3ta / albino / fm8 / bass station etc;

Class A Recordings

Useless Plaztix

Fruity Loops

KRISISDnB : Whats your view on Grooverider being locked up?

Rowney : He should have known better but the laws in dubai are outrageously strict..hope he gets out soon as well as everyone else on the same charge

KRISISDnB : Vinyl or mp3?

Rowney : Both....vinyl in a perfect world but i haven't got the money to press up everything i want to play

KRISISDnB : Online record shop or local record shop?

Rowney : Both - support your local shop though, too many shops going out of business these days and they are part of the heritage of this scene, before vinyl became available online these shops were like mecca to djs lol

KRISISDnB : Technics or Vestax??

Rowney : Technics all day, vestax are good though

KRISISDnB : Coke or Pepsi?

Rowney : Coke

KRISISDnB : Manchester United or Manchester City?

Rowney : United all day...lost track of football these days, used to be a big football fan when i was a kid, music is my life these days

KRISISDnB : Escort Mk 2 or Vauxhall Nova?

Rowney : hahaha...never driven either but i'd take the escort

Rowney : Burger King
